Digital Storytelling and Storybird: Create Digital Stories and Improve Writing Skills! + My Own Story (Old Wise Tree)

Hello people! Welcome back to another exciting topic! I assume everyone here loves reading and especially storytelling. So be ready, this will get your attention.

What is Digital Narrative (Storytelling)?

Digital narratives are the combined multimedia presentation of stories. Media can include texts, videos, images, audio, social media elements, and digital maps.

Why Teachers Should Use It?

By using Digital Storytelling, teachers can help their students to
* Do Researches: Students will do research about a certain topic that they have been assigned or chosen.
* Select Appropriate Digital Resources: Students will try to select appropriate images, videos, other media resources to match them with the ideas in the story. Also, they can learn how to create digital presentations and practice their skills.
* Develop Writing Skills: By creating narratives, students can practice their writing skills.
* Develop Technical Skills: In the 21st century, developing technical skills and building competence in technology is very crucial. While writing digital stories, students can practice their technology knowledge by combining images, videos, sounds, and using digital tools.
* Collaborate: Students can create their stories in groups, share their ideas with their peers, develop problem-solving skills, and practice their social communication skills.
* Express Creativity: Students can use their imagination, brainstorm with their peers, create different materials, and express their creativity.

Let's talk about my experience on Storybird but before that,

What is Storybird?

Storybird is an online platform for storytelling. In this platform, students can compose their stories, poems, and texts while pairing their words on Storybird. Unfortunately, it is not a completely free platform. There is a 7-day free trial, but after that, you have to get a paid account to be able to use its features.

 How to Use It?

First of all, you should create a teacher account to be able to use Storybird.

Then, you can create your own class on Storybird, invite your students, and create a showcase for your stories and the students' stories.

After, creating your class, by clicking the 'Write' section, you can choose different types of writing and start writing your materials.
There are different choices such as picture books, long-form stories, comics, flash fiction, and poetry. Also, each section contains different and various images that you can freely choose and build your stories on it.

For instance, I chose to create a flash fiction and use the first image 'Talking Tree'.

I started to build my story according to the image that I chose on my mind and wrote it. I created a long story that contains different tenses and it has 500 words in it. You can create shorter ones or wrote a long one for your students, it is up to you.

Here is the complete version of my story:

After finishing your story, you can save them, share them publicly or privately with your students. Also, you can see your stories in your account, delete or edit them at any time.
