Duolingo for Teaching English

Duolingo is a worldwide platform for learning different languages, including English. I have been using this platform as an application for learning German and Spanish, and it has been helpful for me to develop my language skills. I am sure it will be beneficial for teachers who want to offer a platform for their students to learn and practice English and the people who want to learn English by themselves. Let's look at it closely.

How to use Duolingo?

Students can use Duolingo from its website with their email, or they can download the application and use it from their mobile devices. Therefore, teachers can make their students use Duolingo at home readily. Also, students can start as a beginner, or they can take a test to find out their level of language, so it is excellent to cover up different students’ levels in the class. After this, students can start taking courses and doing practices to improve their six crucial language skills such as speaking, listening, writing, reading, grammar, and vocabulary at home.

Where to use Duolingo?

While using Duolingo, students can develop many skills. For instance, Duolingo provides materials to students to learn grammar and vocabulary in every course. It can be helpful for teachers to make their students practice grammar and vocabulary at home. Furthermore, teachers can make their students practice listening and speaking at home with Duolingo because it has listening and speaking activities. Students can listen to sentences, vocabularies, and pronunciations in the application. Also, they can improve their speaking skills while answering questions. Moreover, Duolingo has real-life stories for practicing reading, and while students are reading, they can check vocabularies by clicking on them or listen to the whole story and complete the story by choosing different options. It creates a better understanding of different situations and makes students develop communication skills.

Limitations

According to my experience, there is a situation that can be difficult for beginners who do not know grammar very well. For instance, I like to see grammatical points in a structured way while learning a language, but it does not teach it like that. It teaches grammar in the courses by blending with other things. While learning vocabulary in one sentence, students can find themselves in an unknown grammatical point, and it may be confusing for them.

Tips and Suggestions

As I talked about its limitation, I can suggest that while using Duolingo, teachers should make their students either write down the vocabulary and grammar to their notebooks and practice it every day or make them write the things that they remember after each lesson and practice it. That way, it will be easier for them to learn and practice new vocabulary and grammar at home, and they will not get confused. Also, while reading the stories, teachers should advise their students to try not to focus on unknown vocabularies and try to understand the whole story first. After finishing reading or listening to the story, they can go and check it later. This way, they can develop an overall understanding of different situations and be better at handling them.
